The un-ru speaks

Somedays I feel like a guru, but many days I feel like the un-ru. I'm happy and busy with my life, just not particularly ready to answer questions about anything.

Saturday I found my first crocus of the year. God is good! Spring has come again. It has been a very long, slow, cold winter here in Chicago. I have celebrated the thawing of the ground this past week, by digging and moving my perennials. Every year I move several around to see if I can get an better balance of color and bloom through out the summer. We’ll see how this year works.

Since I live in a town house, I have very limited garden spaces. But I do have garden space on each side of my back patio. The whole townhouse is set catty-wampous, so each corner points in a cardinal direction. The back corners are north and east so it is quite shady to the house line but perfect for summer breakfast or suppers on the patio.

The front corners are west and south, and in the front, I have a peculiar 10 foot by 36 foot area between the garage and the house which I call my hidden garden. With the roof lines there is only about 5 feet of sky available so this is my mostly shady garden. When the sun passes over head there are a hot few hours.

This year I moved my large, impressive purple leaved, snake plant, some lilies, coreopsis, glads, spurge, meadow rue, and a astilbe.
